Independent Instructors are instructors that are not currently teaching at a specific school.
Josh Hawley has been practicing and studying Historical European Martial Arts since 2010. After attending regular classes at the Salisbury MEMAG branch for two years Josh was awarded with the position of Assistant Instructor, and later Instructor at this location. Josh has assisted in teaching at several local, regional and national HEMA events, such as: Shortpoint, Longpoint, Octoberfecht, and Fechtschule New York.
He has also participated in numerous demonstrations and lessons at the Salisbury Dogwood Festival, The Chesapeake Celtic Festival, and The Salisbury School. Along with teaching he has volunteered as staff at several events. He has also competed in several open longsword tournaments as well as competed in the Paired Technique Competitions at Shortpoint, Fechtschule New York and Longpoint, where he won first place in each with his partner Betsy Winslow. Josh's enthusiasm, skill, friendly disposition, and natural teaching ability are great assets to MEMAG and the entire HEMA community.
Josh is in charge of the creation and revision of the Messer syllabi used in all MEMAG schools.
John Bax is a HEMA Alliance Certified Instructor who has been a determined student and researcher of Historical European Martial Arts since 2003. He taught a small but dedicated group of students at the Pottstown Pennsylvania branch of MEMAG from 2006-2007 before moving to Salisbury Maryland to co-teach and train with Cory Winslow.
In addition to previously teaching regular classes at MEMAG Schools, he has also either assisted in teaching or held his own classes at several local, regional and national HEMA events, such as: Chivalric Weekend, The HEMA Alliance Mid-Atlantic HEMA Gathering, Shortpoint, Longpoint and Octoberfecht. He also participated in numerous demonstrations and lessons at the Chesapeake Celtic Festival, The Salisbury Dogwood Festival, The Salisbury School and the Maryland Irish Festival.
In addition to teaching, John has also volunteered as staff at several different events, and also participated in the open longsword tournament at Octoberfecht.
John is in charge of the creation and revision of the Ringen (Grappling) syllabi used in all MEMAG schools.
Kris Urs has been attending MEMAG classes since its founding in 2006. He began taking classes at only 12 years old and has diligently worked his way up to Assistant Instructor within MEMAG.
Along with assisting in teaching classes at MEMAG, he has attended classes at the Mid Atlantic HEMA Gathering in 2010, and also Longpoint 2011 where he took part in the open longsword tournament. He has also participated in numerous demonstrations and lessons at the Salisbury Dogwood Festival, The Chesapeake Celtic Festival, and The Salisbury School.
