Regular Classes Private Classes Distance Classes Group Seminars Demonstrations
Regular classes follow a curriculum which has been designed over the course of five years of research and testing. New students begin at the Lehrling Level with a 1-2 year long course on Unarmored Fencing with the Longsword on Foot according to the teachings of the 14th century German Grandmaster, Johannes Liechtenauer. These classes are 2-hours long, and include lectures, solo-drills, partner-drills, bouting, and test-cutting. Within one month of joining a class each student is required to own a complete MEMAG uniform to be worn in class.
After one year each student is required to own approved head/face protection, body protection, gloves and a blunt steel sword. Students first learn the history of the Art and the importance of Chivalric Virtues, and then move on to basic concepts such as stance, footwork, gripping the weapon, attacking, and core tactics. After having been recognized as competent with these subjects, students begin practicing set-plays with partners in order to internalize a multitude of techniques and the fundamental principles behind them. As students work through these techniques and become familiar with them, more and more of an element of randomness is introduced, teaching students to perform correctly even in unpredictable situations. Eventually students engage in free-fencing or bouting, which simulates actual combat in a strenuous yet safe manner. After having been experienced in all manner of tactics, techniques and bouting, students are given the option to be tested in order to advance in rank within the school, so that they can pursue the next level of training with additional weapons.
After at least one year of training, and upon completion of the Lehrling Syllabus, students are given the opportunity to test for the level of Geselle. The student will be charged for each attempt he makes at passing this test. Upon completion of this test, the student will move onto the Geselle level of training. This level consists of 2-hour long classes in the disciplines of Ringen, Messer, Bauern Stangen, Stangen, and Langenschwert.
After at least three years of training, owning an approved trainer in each studied discipline and a sharp steel longsword, and completing all required syllabi, students are given the opportunity to test for the level of Vorfechter. The student will be charged for each attempt he makes at passing this test. Upon completion of this test, the student will move onto the Vorfechter level of training. This level consists of 2-hour long classes in the disciplines of Dolch, Sichel, Ringen, Schwert und Buckeller, Rappier, Messer, Sense, Flegel, Bauern Stangen, and Langenschwert.
After at least six years of training, completion of all required syllabi, owning an approved trainer in each studied discipline, and further training in five selected disciplines, students are given the opportunity to test for the level of Meister. The student will be charged for each attempt he makes at passing this test. One who has attained the rank of Meister will enter a probationary period of one year, at the end of which he will be critiqued by his peers. During this time he must further progress in his studies and continue to contribute to MEMAG and the HEMA community. If his peers find that he has met their standards he is granted the rank of full Meister and his probation ends. If he does not meet his peers' standards then he enters another probationary period of one year and the process repeats.

Private classes may or may not follow the official MEMAG curriculum, depending on the wishes of the client. These classes are a minimum of one hour in length, and may focus on one or more subjects and/or disciplines. Those who participate in private classes pay more per hour than regular class students for customized training. However, they cannot advance in rank without taking all required tests found in the official MEMAG curriculum.
Distance learning classes follow the same curriculum as regular classes, but instead of personal training directly under present instructors, the syllabi are broken down into biweekly video segments that are accompanied with detailed lesson study guides. Along with these teaching elements students are provided with unlimited email contact as well as monthly chat room access with MEMAG instructors to further discuss class concepts. In order to take MEMAG’s online course, students are required to have a partner with whom they can practice, have access to a weapon that pertains to the section they are studying and to give video and email feedback after each lesson. Upon receiving payment for classes the student will receive a confirmation email welcoming them to the MEMAG distance learning program.
On the 1st and the 15th of each month, the student will be sent a link to an instructional MEMAG video. The video will be approximately ten minutes long and cover all physical aspects of a section of the MEMAG syllabus. Also included in the email will be an in-depth study guide that pertains to the same material. After receiving each video the student will be required to practice all topics covered within the lesson and email the MEMAG instructors to relate any problems they may have had, or to simply let us know that they have understood everything. Along with each email, the student must include a short video of himself practicing the covered techniques. This gives MEMAG instructors the ability to view our online students’ progress and allow us to critique any mistakes, which we will email to the student. The student should then put into effect any corrections we have made before moving on to the next lesson. In order to pass the level that the student is working in he must make plans to meet in person with the MEMAG instructors to take his final test. A list of everything covered in the exam will be sent out before completion of the lessons.
